Abstract:I will present an epistemological framework for understanding the notion of knowledge in the context of knowing-in-action, which covers “knowing how” and “tacit knowing”. One essential feature is that knowing is interpreted as attentiveness in action/practice. Another is that knowledge guides or leads people “successfully” in a practice, which ultimately means “towards the best” (for mankind). I will also argue that this notion of knowledge is more basic than knowledge that is expressed in words. I will build on ideas by, among others, William James and Ludwig Wittgenstein.
