摘 要:
Energy transfer from balanced motions (BMs) to near-inertial waves (NIWs) is increasingly recognized as a potentially crucial yet poorly understood component in the ocean energy pathway from generation to dissipation. Estimates of this transfer remain limited by sparse observations that fail to resolve the full spectrum of BMs. Here, leveraging unprecedented fine-scale measurements from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission, we quantify BM-to-NIW energy transfer rates along the western boundary current extensions with energetic BMs and NIWs. Results show that SWOT-derived transfer rates are orders of magnitude higher than those from conventional altimeters, comparable to the local wind power on NIWs, long considered as the dominant NIW source. This arises from SWOT’s capability to resolve fine-scale BMs that interact efficiently with NIWs through their induced strain but are underrepresented by conventional altimeters. These findings uncover the significant BM-to-NIW energy transfer, providing new insights into the ocean energy pathway.
