报告摘要:

China, and other countries around the World are attempting to design, construct and maintain ‘eco-cities’, but unfortunately without much success. These cities are also referred to as ‘Green Cities’ and they are specifically designed to minimize carbon emissions, car use, and pollution while maintaining natural resources and implementing sustainable development practices. This last goal is actually very difficult to define or measure making it problematic to accomplish. Over the last decade, there has been a growing call by the public and urban practitioners to move beyond ‘Green Cities’ to create liveable, healthy and resilient cities and villages. These cities would also contain a diversity of non-human organisms (biodiversity) and all essential ecosystem processes. They also have a high proportion of green space with minimal paved surfaces, an abundance of ecosystem services and healthy and liveable housing for urban dwellers. To achieve these goals requires the integration of the best ecological & social research evidence (urban ecology) with practical design and planning expertise and people’s values. Unfortunately, there is a large knowledge gap regarding how to create these cities. I will present a vision of a broadly focused research program for ECNU that will inform the design, construction and maintenance of liveable, healthy and resilient cities and villages in China and throughout the World.
