Data trading has emerged as a significant trend in the digital economy, giving rise to data platforms that collect and process raw data, and then offer data products (or information) to potential buyers. Firms purchase information to mitigate market uncertainty and increase revenue. However, the extent of this benefit largely depends on market conditions. This study examines the impacts of data trading on the manufacturer’s profit, consumer surplus, and social welfare. We consider a market comprising a data platform, a manufacturer facing demand uncertainty when introducing a new product, and consumers with heterogeneous privacy costs. The platform collects consumers’ data by providing privacy compensation and generates the market-state information, which it sells to the manufacturer to enhance product quality and pricing decision. We find that data trading increases the manufacturer’s profit when market uncertainty is high but reduces it when market uncertainty is low. Notably, when data trading benefits the manufacturer, it improves social welfare but reduces consumer surplus. In a competitive environment, data trading can generate a “win-win” outcome for both manufacturers and consumers, but only under high competition intensity and moderate market uncertainty. Furthermore, in the digital goods market, we find that data trading consistently increases consumer surplus. Our findings not only provide valuable guidance for policymakers by shedding light on the strategic implications of data trading in different market structures, but also challenge prevailing concerns about consumer surplus losses associated with data collection.

田林,复旦大学管理学院管理科学系教授、博士生导师。研究领域为面向平台供应链的运营决策问题,涉及电商平台、共享平台、在线服务平台等。研究成果发表在JMR、MKSC、MS、MSOM、OR、POM、《管理科学学报》等国际与国内知名期刊。主持国家自科杰青项目、优青项目,同时主持或参与可口可乐(上海)、华为技术有限公司、华住集团、中国东方航空等多个企业项目。担任Production and Operations Management的Senior Editor, Decision Sciences、Service Science与JORSC的Associate Editor,《营销科学学报》编委会副主任,以及《系统工程理论与实践》《系统管理学报》的编委。
