David Waite is a Scientia Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Professor Waite obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Tasmania, Masters degree from Monash University and PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His speciality areas of teaching are water chemistry and water treatment and his principle research area is that of investigation of physico-chemical processes in natural and engineered systems. In addition to his role at UNSW in Sydney, Professor Waite is the Executive Director and Chairman of the UNSW Centre for Transformational Environmental Technologies (CTET) in Yixing in Jiangsu Province and is an Executive Editor of the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science & Technology. He was honoured with membership of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2018.

In this wide-ranging presentation, Professor Waite will describe recent advances in understanding of redox-initiated processes in natural and engineered systems arising from research by his team at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Topics to be covered include iron mineral-mediated natural hydrogen generation, iron and copper-mediated degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons and iron and silica-mediated lung disease from inhalation of mineral-rich particles.
