报告人简介:

Dr. Simeon Smaill is the Portfolio Leader for Establishing Indigenous Forests at Scion, responsible for developing research to support  the production, establishment and early management of indigenous tree species. He started his career as a microbiologist focussing on enhancing beneficial plant-soil-microbe interactions in managed and natural forest ecosystems, but over the last 20 years has extended his specialities to include indigenous forest ecology, change, plant production and nutrient modelling in both exotic and indigenous forests. During this time frame he has managed the establishment and delivery of outputs from three of the largest forest trial series ever established in New Zealand. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and produced more than 200 reports for government and commercial clients.

Dr. Smaill is a member of the New Zealand Soil Science Society, the New Zealand Farm Forestry Association, the New Zealand Institute of Foresters and the Small & Medium Enterprises Committee of the Forest Growers Levy Trust. He has received several science and industry awards for the production of research with direct applications to forest management. Since 2018 he has served as an Adjunct Professor at East China Normal University.

报告内容简介:

In this presentation Dr Simeon Smaill will provide a brief background to New Zealand forestry science and Scion, then introduce research exploring options to sustainably increase the productivity of Pinus radiata, which is the dominant exotic forest species in New Zealand. Following this, he will discuss the results of a recently competed project exploring the potential to use Pinus radiata to manage water quality, which created some unexpected results with important implications for forest management strategies.
